Scotty arrives in less than three days!
Scotty doesn't read my blog on a regular basis. It's funny I refer to this online journal as a blog... I really don't like the term 'blog'... it sounds too much like 'blahhhh,' of which the connotation is... well, blah. However, it's faster to say than 'web log' or 'online journal.' Computer guys are great for making up words for things. I wonder how long it will take to make 'blog' an official word in the Oxford dictionary? I wonder if these guys can come up with a new word for 'gay marriage' that won't offend those annoying right wing anti-gay marriage people? And thus help clear things up with the charter? Clarification, what?
Friday... thank god.

Gotta love Google...
So this weekend has turned out to be pretty interesting so far. Yesterday got fitted for the bridesmaids dresses and found that possibly maybe we'll have the dresses in a dark red/burgundy... as opposed to black... which Kim (Tracy's sister) is still going to wear. Anywho, I spent a bunch of time with Tracy at the bridal store spending lots of money and then back at her place to do some box-making. And now I'm going to help her with Christmas crafts this season. I think I am going to start small, with cards and gift tags only. In small, creative batches. But holy CRAP are the supplies expensive. I spent about $200 on supplies today, from paper to scizzors to little decorative things... so let's hope I can get that 'overhead' back. Hmm.
Also online today, had to look up information for my mom on the whole canning salmon deal... and guess what popped up on Google. The Terra 1ncognita blog, where the post of 'Mum's New Hobby' has been archived. Hee hee!
Oh yeah, another Hee hee goes out to Junko and David, who called me from the V2003 festival just so I could hear Coldplay play Yellow. They left two messages on my answering machine. I have to admit the first one sounded a little gibberish, but the second one I could hear everyone singing. Awww, that's so cool!

Ironic's just not the right word for it
After writing that last post I went home only to discover a week-old message on my answering machine at home, from someone who had a copy of my résumé and wanted to interview me, or something. It was for a company that packages corporate gifts/incentives for the tourism hospitality industry. When I investigated further the next day, about the company and the position itself... they are part of the tourism conspiracy!!!
At first I was flattered at them calling me 10 months after sending them a résumé, I thought that the job they were looking at me to fill was something along the lines of what I'm doing right now and maybe possibly paid more. But maybe they didn't look at my résumé hard enough. I found out that the job they were looking for me to possibly fill was a crappy assistant job that paid well, crap. Yes, the other part of the tourism conspiracy theory is that as much as the 'experts' say the 'industry' needs highly trained and motivated people... I doubt anyone with a degree and a half would be motivated by $9.00 an hour.

The Tourism Conspiracy Theory
The tourism industry is based on the trade of donuts. And free stationary. This is my theory, from what I've observed in having worked at the 'front lines' and behind the scenes. When I worked for Tourism Vancouver YVR, we would often get visits from hotel sales managers, tour operators, and destination management companies at our Info Centres. In order to persuade us to give them business - e.g. book a tour, a hotel room, etc., they would ply us with gifts of donuts (anything Tim Horton's, which was conveniently located at the airport...), free pens and pads of paper, post-it notes, mouse pads, rulers, calculators. Some have brought by pizza, cake, cookies, all in the name of getting their name out there. Some have gotten a little more creative with mints à la Altoids in logo'd containers. Some go upscale with T-shirts, hats, pins.... (I wonder what happened to my Whistler Blackcomb t-shirt...)... blankets, umbrellas... you name it, it probably has a company logo on it.
All of which, without this incentive, we would never think to send a group of guests to West Coast vs. Landsea, or The Hilton Airport vs. the Marriott Airport. Do they realistically expect that a sale or referral would have been from the basis of free cookies? Hard to believe, but there is some grain of truth in that. I can't think of a specific time that has happened, but I'm sure I've booked a hotel room based on the fact that I've met and remembered the sales manager...
Now that I have taken a more behind-the-scenes roll, the tourism industry seems to run on an endless trade of free stuff. Free hotel rooms, fam tours... of course, it's another way of marketing... I mean, aside from our splashy website and KICK-ASS brochure, surely there is another way to make/keep strategic alliances with our tour operators and return customers? What kind of free stuff can we dish out?

Pen Names
So after reading all the Sophie Kinsella books I can get my hands on, I've been looking online for other works of hers that she may have done or is in the process of writing (e.g. a follow-up to Can You Keep a Secret?)... when I came across an article in The Guardian which states that not only is the author Sophie Kinsella, but also Madeleine Wickham! According to a Guardian article, she has written 7 novels under her own name, Madeleine Wickham, as well as the Shopaholic and Secret books as Sophie Kinsella.
Goes to show, eh? I should get started on those articles. Soon. Well maybe in the fall. Maybe I should come up with a pen name first... I've already got one in mind, but I'm sure you can come up with some. Non-porn sounding suggestions please. Thanks. :P
PS: By the way, the movie rights for Can You Keep a Secret have already been picked up, supposedly starring Kate Hudson, who will also be producing it. Interesting.

Pumpin' on the Stere-ohhhh
Okay, so after about two weeks of having internet radio at work, I've come to certain conclusions: Top 40 stations are the same everywhere, worldwide. This SUCKS!!! I finally settled on BRMB Birmingham, UK, as my radio station of choice to listen to at work, because it plays a good amount of Britpop along with some great North American pop. But it's all pop. Not dissing pop or anything like that, but my annoyance is with fact that they, like every other freakin' radio station in the world, has certain songs on HIGH rotation. High rotation as in, every 90 minutes (okay that's an exaggeration, but still). I mean, I love Robbie but I don't need to listen to him "Feel" 5 times a day.

Does the number 16 mean anything to you?
I just got a post in my Guest Book from "#16" - apparently someone who went to school with me, and someone I should know. So I'm thinking... like, elementary school? High School? Université d'Ottawa? UBC? Is this Number 16 a student number? A jersey number?? Like I replied back in the Guest Book, I am intrigued. I have my ideas of who it might be... will have to do a little digging, but buddy, if you can help me out!!!
